Colombia's Constitutional Court approved the pension reform proposed by the government of President Gustavo Petro on August 25, 2026, clearing the measure after a legal process that stretched back more than three years.

The court validated the majority of the reform's provisions and set April 2027 as the date it enters into force. The legislation originated with the Petro government in March 2023 and was previously approved by the Chamber of Representatives in June 2024 before reaching the court.

The read here is that the April 2027 start date gives the state more than seven months to prepare implementation - a window that will test whether the government can translate a court-blessed text into a functioning system before the reform lands on beneficiaries.
